Of course, this likely isn’t the actual reason Nolan’s films are so successful, but it is a funny and odd rule which gives some insight into his philosophy about filming and work in general. Hathaway claims that Nolan’s opinion on the matter can be summed up as follows: “If you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working.”

While there are likely to be many to jump to the defense of actors and film crew claiming that this kind of mentality is inhumane, this doesn’t mean that these people get no breaks. There are other areas which workers can take breaks outside of the set, so the rule kind of makes sense.
That isn’t to say that having no chairs on a set isn’t odd, it seems to be something which Hathaway was taken aback by, just that it isn’t too far fetched. She jokingly continues on to say that this could be the secret to his success.
