Rumors of a Chrono Cross remake have been circulating for months as several leaks have pointed towards the Chrono Trigger sequel finally receiving a long-awaited remaster to bring the game into the modern era. Chrono Cross collaborated with popular mobile RPG Another Eden last month after being previously leaked and an Nvidia database leak from September claimed that a remastered version of the classic PlayStation RPG may be in development. On Friday, Chrono series composer Yasunori Mitsuda teased fans on Twitter with an upcoming project, sparking rumors of a remake.

The tweet from Mitsuda thanked fans for the birthday wishes left for the composer on his 50th birthday on Friday and expressed his desire to show his gratitude through his upcoming work. Mitsuda claimed that his new project could be revealed as early as next month, though he did not divulge any information as to what the mystery project will be. Previous leaks reported that a musician was working on a major PlayStation remake which Mitsuda was believed to be connected to.
A return to the Chrono series would be a long time coming for Square-Enix with official means to play the 2000 RPG mostly being lost to time. Chrono Cross was re-released on the PlayStation Network in 2011 as one of the service’s PS one Classics but is not available on the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 stores. Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, has seen multiple re-releases over the 25+ years since its release, most recently coming to Steam in 2018.
A potential Chrono Cross remaster comes as Square Enix has a plethora of massive releases on the horizon. The developer recently brought the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake to PC and has several big-name games set to launch in the first few months of 2022 including another Final Fantasy game in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin and the Switch exclusive Triangle Strategy. Alongside the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy 16, a potential Chrono Cross remaster or remake would only accentuate an already stacked line-up for the JRPG juggernaut.
