Chrono Cross: Shadow Forest Sleeping Monster

The first step toward passing the Shadow Forest sleeping monster is to collect the Aroma Pouch. Fortunately, this key item is found very near to the monster, and classic JRPG fans should direct their attention to the small waterfall in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Indeed, there is a cave under this waterfall, and the Aroma Pouch is in a chest that is situated at the back of that cave.

As a brief aside, players can also collect one of Chrono Cross’s Skelly bones while they are in the cave under the waterfall. This is done simply by reading the note that is sitting on the ground next to the Aroma Pouch chest and opting to pick up a bone from the pile of bones. This action will trigger a short piece of dialogue from Skelly, in which he will reveal more of his backstory, and fans will be free to proceed as soon as that dialogue comes to an end.

Armed with the Aroma Pouch, fans should return to the Shadow Forest sleeping monster and interact with one of the three spherical trees on the screen. This will cause an orb to appear next to the player’s Chrono Cross party, and that orb can be used to bring a slime creature with a matching color to the sleeping monster. For full clarity, here are details on the positions of the three slime creatures, and fans should walk slowly when leading them:

Blue: In the cave with the Aroma Pouch. Green: On the screen before the screen with the sleeping monster. Red: On the first screen in the Shadow Forest.

Upon returning to the sleeping monster, the beast will stir and eat the slime creature. If the blue or green creatures were brought, then a battle with the Quadfidd will ensue, and fans will gain passage through the Shadow Forest after dispatching the foe. If the red creature was brought, fans will not need to rely on Chrono Cross’s battle system, as the sleeping monster will shrink, run away, and award the Skull Duggery Frame.
