NFL star Joe Burrow is just 26 years old, but has an incredible amount of accomplishments behind him. He spent two years as a backup quarterback at Ohio State University before transferring to Louisiana State University in 2018. His team finished 6th in the final AP rankings that year. The next season, he helped take LSU to winning the College Football National Championship, and then took home the Lombardi Award, Manning Award, Heisman Trophy, and AP player of the year award, too. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020 and expectations for him have been extremely high.

When he’s not helping take the Cincinnati Bengals through the NFL playoffs, Burrow plays a lot of video games. In an interview from Friday meant to allow questions regarding the upcoming NFL AFC Championship Game, Burrow was asked about his routine on the flight to the game – his preparation. Burrow responded that if he’s done with his film study, from time to time he’ll play Super Smash Bros. with other Bengals players. “That’s always fun,” he says, noting that teammate Clay Johnston is one of the better Smash Bros. players on the team.
Burrow was also asked what his Super Smash Bros. main was, referring to the character that he mainly plays. His answer was Ness, which as Super Smash Bros. players know is a high-skill character that takes a lot of practice to play optimally. It’s also an especially annoying character to play against, due to Ness’ ranged abilities and crowd control.
The revelation of Burrow’s love of Super Smash Bros. and his main being Ness is unfortunately not quite breaking news. It’s a revelation for many, given the attention on Burrow due to the big upcoming NFL match, but is something the quarterback has shared before. Back in 2019, Burrow also confirmed he mained Ness in Super Smash Bros. He also plays Pokemon, and said his favorite SpongeBob episode is “Dirty Dan.”
It’s always great to hear celebrities enjoy video games, especially when they’re reaching career moments like Burrow potentially going to the Super Bowl. It makes celebrities feel more human. Or, for Super Smash Bros. players that despise Ness, might make Burrow into quite the villain. Either way, it’s a fun story for NFL fans.
