Originally an Xbox 360 title from 2012, Fez is a 2D puzzle-platformer set in a 3D world. As player character Gomez, players must rotate the level in order to progress and solve puzzles while also collecting cubes and cube fragments. While it was initially an Xbox exclusive, it would later be ported to PC, iOS devices, and the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.

Upon its release, it quickly became something of an indie darling, not only earning praise from gamers and critics but receiving multiple rewards. Phil Fish, the game’s designer and founder of studio Polytron, also achieved celebrity status, having been heavily featured in the Indie Game: The Movie documentary, which covered Fez’s development.

A sequel was initially planned and even announced in 2013, but it was canceled when Phil Fish publicly and infamously left the games industry entirely following a heated argument on Twitter. While the argument itself was not the reason for it, multiple factors ultimately contributed to Fish’s desire to no longer work in games. He did go on to co-found another studio called Kokoromi and worked on puzzle game SuperHyperCube, which released in 2016.

Polytron still exists and is responsible for the Switch port of Fez. However, while it doesn’t seem like there’s technically anything stopping the studio from making a sequel now, it hasn’t commented on the possibility since Fish’s departure.

Fez is available on iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch.
